Poppy Seed Breadsticks

 

Ingredients

 

Makes 72 breads ticks

  • 1 cup hot milk (about 120 °F)

  • 1/4 CRISCO Stick or 1/4 cup all-vegetable shortening

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 package active dry yeast

  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp water

  • poppy seeds


Method:

  1. Combine milk, 1/4 cup shortening, sugar and salt. Cool slightly.

  2. Combine yeast and 2 1/2 cups flour in large bowl. Stir in milk mixture until well blended. Beat in enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough.

  3. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Let rest for 5 minutes.

  4. Cut dough into 72 equal pieces with sharp knife. Roll out each piece between palms of hands or on flat surface to make a 6-inch strip. Place on greased cookie sheets.

  5. Combine egg and water. Brush breadsticks with egg mixture and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Cover; let rest for 20 minutes.

  6. Heat oven to 300°F. Bake at 300°F for 45 to 50 minutes or until golden brown. Do not over bake. Cool on racks.
