  Dessert Recipes - Real Treacle Pudding Recipe

Ingredients

  • 175 g/6 oz/1 1/2 cups plain (all-purpose) flour

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp ground ginger

  • 175 g/6 oz/3 cups fresh breadcrumbs

  • 100 g/4 oz/1 cup shredded (chopped) vegetable suet

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 175 g/6 oz/1/2 cup black treacle (molasses)

  • 45 ml/3 tbsp milk

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

  • Butter, for greasing

  • Sweet White Sauce, to serve


Method:

  1. Sift the flour and ginger into a bowl. Stir in the breadcrumbs and suet. Add the egg.

  2. Warm the treacle and milk in a saucepan. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda. Stir into the dry ingredients to form a soft, dropping consistency.

  3. Turn into a 1.25 liter/5 1/2 cup greased pudding basin. Cover with a double thickness of greased greaseproof (waxed) paper or foil, twisting and folding under the rim to secure.

  4. Steam for 2 1/2 hours. Turn out and serve with Sweet White Sauce.
